Dream Theater fan Marc Papeghin of France – known as PintoZ on the Dream Theater Forums – created a video compilation this week that features the film footage from almost every audio sample on the band's 1994 Awake album, as well the band's 1995 EP, Change of Seasons. Papeghin previously made a video of samples that appear in the band's 2003 song, "Honor Thy Father."
"It's all a giant puzzle really!" Papeghin said in an email to The Mooreatorium. "Transcripts of almost every sample has already been made on DT faqs, so I didn't have to figure out everything myself. The real work was to acquire and edit all the movies, and synchronize everything in the right order. I find it pretty fun."
Of Kevin Moore's use of samples, Papeghin said: "Since we're talking about Kevin Moore, 'Space-Dye Vest' definitely was the most interesting to put together. 'The Fifth Estate' documentary was pretty hard to get, but I eventually found someone on the internet who had it and burnt me a DVD. I did my best to find the Jim Hill comments on OJ Simpson and the Conan O'Brien segment, unsuccessfully I'm afraid."

That is really freakin awesome! I'm glad he put that together! I love Kev's use of soundbytes in his stuff and missed them on blood. He gets some awesome stuff. It's interesting to listen to memory hole.
A montage for take the time would be pretty sweet too. That one would be difficult.

Thanks for sharing, Mike! Kevin is a sample wizard. His late Night w/ Conan O'Brien sample from S-DV is extremely hard to locate, I know. I tried doing so ages ago.

Thanks for putting this up! I've followed this forum for many months till now silently, but this was the last drop before expressing my gratitude for all the thorough info, and the good mood, attitude you (and almost all) nurture here. This album means a lot to me, and this tiny puzzles enriched my experience of it! Since then I follow all works of Kevin (now waiting for the new OSI almost patiently ) I feel this year will be (and already has been) full of really quality, delicate music

Welcome, sxxorp! Glad you joined, and thanks for the nice words. The thing I love most about this video is the documentary part of the father and son talking. It's apparently called "The Fifth Estate." I've listedn to SDV for 18 years now and I never realized that was real documentary footage. Wow. I thought it was from a movie.

For me the "the everything is around you ,the only danger is inside you" was the most interesting: I thought it's an esoteric self-help recording No I'm kidding - but I like the actor, who's only listening, very much (Willem Dafoe), and I1ve never known about this without the vid. It would be a more appreciated though I think a more difficult project to make the same with Chromakey albums (I'd welcome especially Dead Air for Radios)

I think most (if not all) of the DAFR samples are from interviews etc Kevin did with friends and people he met. The sample in SOS is of a German hitchiker he met, and Mouse contains a message his friend left on Kev's answer machine. You Go Now uses a lot of obscure but probably track-down-able samples. Am I right in thinking Graveyard Mountain Home almost exclusively uses samples from Age 13?
I always felt that a lot of the audio samples in the Dream Theater songs felt a little out-of-place. They really fit on 6:00 and Space-Dye Vest, but otherwise they feel somewhat distracting (the samples in Take the Time - from I&W - irk me the most). I think a lot of that is probably how they were mixed.

Oh, thanks for the insights! Wow - answering machine! It's really a bit different to listen to the song with more background. As many times I've heard I&W, Awake, an Scenes from a Memory (these could take the test of time well) - everything is in place for me - including: "Ora che ho perso la vista, ci vedo di più" I heard the same of GMH.

man, that was sick! I always pictured the "he can't love anything, least of all a woman" thing was black and white...
We need to get a master quote list going, from the interviews on DAFR, the NASA record and "practice of mindfulness" thing on You Go Now, the "spiritual supermarket" guy and Age 13 stuff on GMH, Dan Rather on OSI 1, ect ect.

One less: When You Drive (I was surprised by this, I practice meditation, so I searched for it back then): "Sampled dialog is from an audio book entitled: "The Present Moment: A Retreat on the Practice of Mindfulness" by Vietnamese Buddhist Monk -- Thich Nhat Hanh. The female voice is from the same recording, manipulated via a computer for the "chorus""
