i listened to this song for the 20,000th time today and for some reason it hit me like a ton of bricks...what a song!
by the way i also love the connection with SDV:
Love is an act of blood and I'm bleeding A pool in the shape of a heart
A heart that beats for blood.
hes had this concept for a while and its beautiful how he expresses it.

I think that line is really well-constructed and sums up the whole message of OSI's three albums. We know that "Office of Strategic Influence" is about war, while "Free" and "Blood" seem to be about relationship and family issues. The line "the heart beats for blood" interwines all those messages. "Beating for blood" can mean you are blood thirsty like in war, or it can mean you are seeking love, or it can mean you realize that family (your blood) is most important.
That line is so well-constructed that it addresses all of those themes at once, IMO. And you're right, it can also be traced back to his SDV lyrics.

Sure, you can isolate that one line from the song and determine that the lyrics focus on relationships. But in the wider context of the rest of the lyrics this song is about more than just matters of the heart. These lyrics also very cleverly deal in opposition to war, specifically North America's new-millenial wars. Referencing North America's christian-fundamentalist delusion: 'the wind's at our backs when we attack/'cause god is our man, he understands'... The evidence of Kevin's awareness is there on OSI records : 'They'll see it our way when we promise no-one gets hurt.' Fragmented, subtle indicators...

Forgot to add that this song is still as rewarding as on the first listens. One of the true standouts in the incredible OSI arsenal.

it gets me thinking and maybe this is not that profound but -- the opposite of love isnt really hate. Its actually indifference.

I was just driving and listening to the this song. I realized Kevin's main message in the song and with a number of OSI songs:
Love is war.
Think about it. Love is supposed to be a beautiful thing, but all too often it is the biggest source of pain in our lives and can be incredibly violent and destructive. Just like Jordin Sparks says "love is a battlefield." Kevin is saying that love is war.

interesting. I get something similar but a little different from the song. People usually associate the heart with love--the heart beats for love. Well kevin is saying(brilliantly in my opinion) that actually(and cleverly scientific) the heart is more savage and it just wants blood. There are many ways it can satisfy this lust.
The first stanza i interpret as being something about relationships getting old...the heart needs fresh blood.
then War is also a way the heart seems to get blood.
I guess he is saying that just as relationships get old and we need something new our society seems to have everything we want(ask anyone) yet always needs a new war.
not sure if the conclusion i arrive at is precisely ` love is war ' but its not far off.
