In short- Mike Portnoy can't growl. i LOL everytime i hear it! i mean, MP WTF DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?! how about those blastbeats? i also lol at them! ;D it's freaking hilarious!! FYI - MP can growl (and quite well, imo), which you can see if you check out the samples and story here: www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/m2352022.aspxI think it was a pretty dumb move to "soften" the growls out of a fear that the fans couldn't handle heavier vocals, but whatever, maybe we'll get a live version that was as intended. Anyway, generally speaking, I love the new album, and I think its easily the best thing they've done since Six Degrees. I'm kind of surprised at all the hate its getting here (not so much at the fact that people don't like it as much as at the WAY that dislike is being expressed, e.g., the silly and inaccurate stereotyping of the 'modern' DT fans, the whole "loldtsux" attitude, etc.). I'm probably one of the biggest Kevin Moore fanboys out there, and he's easily one of my top favorite lyricists, and I do admit that some of DT's recent lyrics have been pretty awful (e.g., "As I Am", "The Answer Lies Within"), and there are even a couple on BC&SL that are... less than stellar (particularly, "A Rite of Passage" and "Wither"), but I don't really get the whole attitude of "literal, straightforward lyrics" = "bad lyrics" or why a "storytelling" approach equates to a "bad" approach. I mean, sure, I appreciate the brilliance with which Kev creates his mostly metaphorical lyrics, and its one of the reasons I love him so much, but I think its just silly and pretentious to imply that more straightforward lyrics can't also invoke emotion or aren't worthy of appreciation. For example, I think some of MP's lines in "The Best of Times" are some of the most "emotional" DT moments of all (e.g., "Thank you for the inspiration, Thank you for the smiles, All the unconditional love that carried me for miles, But most of all, thank you for my life" - simple and straightforward, sure, but also pretty effective at getting the point across). My biggest issue with "bad" lyrics is when they're just cliche or cheesy, but that's totally different from being straightforward and literal. I won't deny that DT has had more than their share of cliche and cheesy lyrics, but I don't see them being nearly as present on this album as they have in the past. As for the other tracks on the album, Nightmare to Remember and Count of Tuscany do both have pretty awful titles, but in the context of what they're about, I don't think they're too terrible. They're both just telling real-life stories of events in JP's life. (Although I will admit that the "all the finest wines improve with age" line in TOC does make me cringe every time I hear it). Shattered Fortress is ok too, although I guess a lot of it is recycled. Anyway, hopefully I won't just be written off as a DT fanboy who is burying his head in the sand and is refusing to accept reality (and I certainly don't think everything DT has done is great - I have significant issues with each of the 3 albums preceding BC&SL), but if I am, so be it. I already have fans on the DT boards constantly thinking the same thing (but in the other direction) when I try to tell them how great Kev's solo and post-DT stuff is, so I guess it wouldn't be too big of an adjustment to have it go the other way here. (Are there really so few people who actually just like BOTH?)

Hey, zep. Thanks for posting. Sorry about what happened over at the DT forum. I started off just wanting to share the interviews and inviting Kevin fans, but then i got a little sensitive when the anti-Kevin comments came.
But I do like your topic about whether people can like both early DT and modern DT. I actually do think DT has created a lot of great music the last 10 years. I just don't love every minute of every song like I did with I&W and Awake and I think they are capabale of taking time to make music where i love the whole album start to finish. Maybe I am expecting too much.
I think SFAM is a masterpiece and I actually really like all of Octavarium a hell of a lot. I love much of SDOIT, except for the Glass Prison (which most people love for some reason). I think my biggest beef is that they release albums that, although good or very good, are not as excellent as they are capabale of. They set the standard with I&W and Awake, which captivate from start to finish. Their recent album have holes, and they are better than that.
Are you going to the Brookhaven show this weekend? I might tickets. Maybe on ebay if they are sold out. I'll be wearing my OSI t-shirt most likely, so look for me!

I listened to parts of it but, to be honest I haven't listened regularly to DT in a long time. It just does not reach out and grab me as before. The first few albums sounded cohesive and later everything sounds disjointed. A heavy metal band with a keyboardist playing his own album and the two are stitched together in a weird annoying way.
It kinda reminds me of the alternative scene from the 1990's where bands just did stuff to sound more weird so they could get the badge of being more alternative than the next. In DT's case it sounds they throw in technical parts and sacrifice the song haphazardly just so they can prove they are the most prog. Maybe they are overburdened from their extensive side projects to "Take The Time" with DT.
I saw someone mention Frost. I really like their last album. I'm also into Chromakey and OSI. Not to bash DT because they obviously do whatever they want which is fine. They just have been uninteresting to me far longer than what albums I did like. So DT fans don't bash me because this is the first time I've thought about DT in many years and don't listen to them.

Hey Mike - no worries about the DTF thread. Wasn't your fault. You should know that I wasn't ignoring your first message... I just didn't lock the thread right away because I was hoping it might lead to a more productive conversation. Despite what it may seem like, there are actually quite a few Kevin Moore fans over there... he's always just a controversial topic though, partly because people feel so strongly about him, and partly just because its such a common topic that gets discussed to death. I was planning on keeping an eye on it, but I guess it just got a little out of hand and I lost track of it.
I'm hoping our two boards will be able to get along, as I think this place could be a great resource and it would be cool to have interaction between the two. Also, I haven't forgotten about all those pics I'm supposed to be getting to you... I've just been crazy busy lately, and it'll involve a lot of scanning.
Anyway, I will be at Brookhaven... Row JJ in the Orchestra, aisle seats. I'll keep an eye out for you.

No prob. Take your time with the DT pics. I'm excited to see them. I think I'm gonna try to get some lawn tickets at Brookhaven and sneak in after some of the early bands play since I mostly would like to see DT. I saww July 4th fireworks on the lawn there and it was great. We got a blanket and snuck in some beer, etc. I've never seen a show there though.

I grew up right down the road from that place (in Port Jeff Station), but I somehow never saw a show there until last summer, when I went for King's X/Living Colour/Extreme. Pretty cool place to see a show. I'll probably be getting there early and maybe pre-gaming w/ some friends in the parking lot. I don't know much about BigElf or Scale the Summer, but I went to the Philly show last weekend and caught Zappa Plays Zappa, and I would definitely recommend trying to at least catch their set. Those guys are pretty interesting.

whats wrong with the "lol dt sucks attitude"? hehhe not sure if that remark was aimed at me or not, but loldtsux is more or less what comes to my mind when i think about them. umm SOrry??
i havent enjoyed anything they have done since SFAM, and even that I felt was a big drop from Awake. I know a lot of DT fans , even ones who have also become disillusioned with them will disagree but ...well thats fine. I honestly dont care about DT, i mean i am a little ticked off(mostly at myself) that i continued to buy album after album hoping for something but eventually i just accepted that the path they are on does not interest me in the least.
I happen to find Kevin Moore a very creative musician, i love his music and the albums with DT are no exception. But thats pretty much where it ends for me. I guess i dont understand this attitude that DT fans seem to have that DT is somehow more important.

So Pain of Salvation is not touring with Prog Nation 2009? I just noticed that. I got confused cause the local flyers and ads still mentioned them. Darn. I like them.

whats wrong with the "lol dt sucks attitude"? hehhe not sure if that remark was aimed at me or not, but loldtsux is more or less what comes to my mind when i think about them. umm SOrry?? There's nothing wrong with thinking DT sucks... obviously people aren't gonna like everything they do. I just find it a little ridiculous when people seem to act all like DT fans are just stupid or ignorant or in denial or whatever, or when people are taking the attitude of, like "omg, lol, you like DT? wtf is wrong w/ you?!?! lolzolz". Its basically the equivalent of saying "well, I don't like it, so you must be wrong because you like it". Just seems like a pretty childish and immature attitude to take. And honestly, I wasn't aiming at anybody in particular or anything specifically said... it was more just a reaction to the general feeling I got after reading through not only this thread, but similar types of things at other places. And also, I get equally annoyed when the criticism goes the other way (i.e., DT fans acting that way about Kev and Kev's fans). Maybe even moreso. @mike - PoS was dropped probably a little over a month ago, as was Beardfish. Apparently InsideOut realized that they couldn't afford to send the band's over, so they were forced to drop off the tour. Totally sucks, because I've been dying to see PoS live for like 7 or 8 years, and I was way more excited about seeing them than I was about seeing DT. I'm starting to think that if I ever want to see them live I'll just have to go to Sweden.

I've seen DT live in NYC 3 times, and once when they opened for Yes in my hometown. Every show they blew me away; greatest band performances I've seen next to the 2 PT shows I've attended. Can't bring myself to travel 300+ miles to see DT play a bunch of new songs that don't grasp me...leaving me only wishing I had heard something better from the past :/ heh. If, however, they had Riverside or PT on the bill I wouldn't hesitate.
