So I was thinking this morning about Kevin's role in DT back in the day. I think he had a bigger role in the band's brief commercial success and vision than people realize. For example, their the top single's from I&W and Awake were "Pull Me Under" and "Lie," which each had lyrics written by Moore. That's a big deal. Lyrics and the chorus can really make or break a song.
And let's take it a step further. Kevin was responsible for the album title and concept for each of the first three albums. The phrase "When Dream and Day Unite" comes from the song "Only a Matter of Time," which was written by Kevin. And the phrase "images and words" comes from in "Wait For Sleep." Meanwhile, the concept of "awake" is most prevalent in "6:00" where Kevin decribes being awakened and "kicked from a dream."
Idk, that's pretty awesome. He was the driving force behind the band's early vision and concepts, it seems.

IMO, Kevin fit more at the Fates Warning table as opposed to the Dream Theater kiddie table...STILL DOES! And i also think he was a HUGE damn part of jumpstarting their career in various ways. The band's Mary of Scots symbol + I&W's band logo are both used to this day too, right? You're totally correct, Mike...what made DT big everywhere was song Kevin wrote. The 1st single for I&W...when "Pull Me Under" hit all over the place on Mtv/radio.

hell yeah! Kev was the motor of DT... as u said Sacred Heart was Kevin idea and "Pull Me Under" (which was remixed and released in the CD "Dream Theater's Greatest Hit (... and 21 pretty cool songs)) have Kevin lyrics... and even more, the best song they have in their discography comes in Awake and it is "Space-Dye Vest" it's a shame they can't play it 'cause is a Moore's song! ^^... so Kev's role was HUGE and most of the new fans underrate him u.u

I don't really care about the new DT fans' opinion on Kevin, I guess they did not witness that era as we did... Maybe it's because they did not see/feel/listen to the change as we did... Whenever I listen to Space Dye Vest it takes me back 12 years, and it hurts as much as it did back then... I cannot recall any other later DT songs that are full of raw emotion. I have always said that Kevin was the heart and soul of DT. Yes, they still make good music and I love 6doit (I did not listen to their latest album yet, I'm kind of avoiding it) and I do find myself in About to Crash (and reprise) but nothing ever comes close to Wait For Sleep for me... I tell you, he must have written those lyrics for me and I do know a lot of people who identify with his songs more than DT songs in general. So his role, to me was the heart and soul. And if I ever get a tattoo, it'll be the Sacred Heart, with the fire and the barbed wires, exactly the same feeling in Wait For Sleep, when your heart hurts so much that it is on fire and it is so crushed by the barbed wire around it, but even in your grief your heart beats (and we all know that it beats for Blood ;-)

T.T every time i listen to it memories come back to my head and the PAIN is so intolerable that makes me cry... and i dunno... my heart just blow up u.u!!!

It's DT's decision not to play it live. It's not Kevin's. I'm wondering what they will do when there will be some Awake's anniversary...will they play the entire album like they did for I&W?

Rudess will never play that beautiful song... that idea makes me mad!

a question for all: what do you think about the song Disappear from 6DOIT? I think it was a (timid) temptative for DT to do a song like SDV

i agree, lukeduke. I think I saw an interview at the time when MP said that Disappear was this lineup's SDV. I disagree. SPV has genuine raw emotion from a hurt individual. Disappear feels like a manufactured fake emotion.

Nah, it feels pretty strong to me. Love the mood, lyrics and the singing. Really emotional stuff, nothing since that song/album matches it.

Disappear is a pretty good song but comparing it to SDV is just ridicilous. No other song will ever match it, especially not Disappear, which is emotional but not heartfelt. If that makes any sense? :-)

Yep, Kevin had a huge role in how DT was back in their hey-days, and their current symbol etc.

If that makes any sense? :-) yea i find Disappear pretty contrived compared to SDV. i think the closest this lineup has come is "one last time" which i guess may have been written by sheranian so maybe not really this lineup. I think labrie sings it wonderfully, at least the first like 100 seconds of it before i t goes off into what is in my opinion wankery.
