well... i was hearin' this song and this idea come up to my mind... it apparently talks about the decision Kev took back in 1993 to leave DT... "here's your white lie, here's your alibi" could make reference to the terms he left the band (supposedly he left in good terms) but we can see there's some friction between Portnoy and Moore... "i was feeling like a product placement" could refer to the way that Portnoy was headin' the band into the mainstream...
i dunno what u think...

When you say "it apparently talks about the decision Kev took back in 1993 to leave DT" is this your conclusion(not to say its an incorrect one) or did Moore at some point hint at this? maybe the lines "Your gone move along move along....you were wrong you were wrong" refer to the way they just said "ok your gone, we are going to finish the mixing of Awake with you, take a bye bye ...we'll just get someone else" rather than make any effort at all to compromise or negotiate something for him to stay? I wonder if DT has heard Blood?? Maybe they should consider covering it on their next album!  |

also the line "we'll stick together 'till a better one comes along"... i think that here Moore thought to leave the band after Images & Words tour but he decided to continue until they finish Awake while they searched a new keyboardist... but i dunno xD |

To me that song is so openly and obviously about the rebound guy/girl you are with after breaking up with the love of your life. It's "just another false start" which implies that it was wrong from the start. I think for Kevin and DT at the start was pretty much what made it right, it went wrong towards the end. So think about it, you're hurting from this break up and then comes along this new person and you let them in for various reasons, mainly because you need to get over all the hurt and pain. Then when you realise that she/he is the wrong person and you are still hung up on the break up & the person you used to be with; you know that it was just another false start.... Especially if you were the rebound guy/girl for your rebound girl/guy.
Yet I can see the parallels you are pointing out, still I'd like to think Kevin would be over DT enough not to write a song 16 years after he left the band... Very interesting interpretation, though (yeah, I know, I said mine was the obvious one).
Oh and DT should never cover OSI. It makes my hair stand on end to listen to Rudess playing Wait For Sleep(and shredding it to pieces!!!^.^) anyway, I don't think I can take OSI being covered by them....

About the interpretation, I agree with ceren.
it's an interesting interpretation, but I don't think he wrote that song thinking about leaving DT.

Yes, I totally agree with ceren. I was thinking about the song's interpretation a few months ago and I initially thought wiche might be right, but it slowly became clear it's about a romantic relationship. Just like Kev's lyrics in DT's "Light Fuse and Get Away," he is saying that the man in the song is basically using the girl for companionship and sex until "a better one comes along." Then he tells her to "move along." It's a really evil song almost! We've all done it though, as sad as it is.

LOL... yeah! i thought of a relationship initially (mainly 'cause im experimenting the things that Ceren said xD) but then i came out with this crazy idea... so i dunno... it could be both ways... only Moore knows what's the intention of the song ^^

Thats a pretty wild interpretation. I'm pretty sure for someone as forward thinking as Kevin is, he certainly isn't still caught up on leaving DT and isn't writing song lyrics about it decades later.
All this petty slamming on DT is really immature too. I don't think Kevin would condone it in any way.

LOL i mean why is it petty to slam DT? Would it be more petty or less petty if we were to praise DT?? You seem to understand `Kevin' a lot more than I would presume to. I have had to make some choices, yes there have been some life changing decisions that I had to make. I guess compared to Moore they might seem less dramatic but you know i think about them all the time. "what if i had made choice B instead of A"..."what if?" ..cant really help it. Given the magnitude of Moore's decision, well i would be surprised if its not part of him at least subconsciously. Maybe it is a wild interpretation, maybe its natural to apply what we know about his life to his lyrics.. but then again maybe it was just one of many false starts.. I prefer to see it more abstractly myself. Its a song about false starts, its pretty great and its pretty widely applicable. |

Agreeing with ckfan here. Kevin is progressive, he has moved on, and he had so many opportunities to slag off DT or MP, which he never used. I do believe that he has moved on, as evidenced so well by his projects and soundtracks, I don't think he is looking back concerning this particular subject. I also need to say that imo DT does not need Kevin, nor does he need them. DT is happy with Rudess (suits them better with where they are going) and Kevin is happy with what he does so let's leave it at that. I am not saying he hasnt moved on. However it *is* a song about False Starts and I dont see why such a huge one in his life should be disregarded as a possibility. In other words i dont see why such an experience couldnt have contributed to the song.
but anyway i guess this discussion has lead me to see that a lot of what i like about the lyrics are just how universal they are.
