I must say that, as much as I love Ray Alder, this Arch Matheos album beats the spit out of Redemption. From all aspects... Jim's riffs, the lyrics, Jarzombek's drums, Aresti's guitar solos, Arch's fantastical vocal melodies.... it all makes Redemption look like child's play. Maybe it's unfair to compare the 2 bands, but I can't help it.

i think its a pretty fair comparison. I mean they are both the exact same genre...

There's no doubt this can be the best Album of 2011! I should find a way to buy this CD!
Everything and everyone works excellent in this album.
The singing melodies are somewhat attractive and unique.
Guitar sounds are the best to my ears.
Drumming is decent.
What else do i need?! It's solid and gives me wanna listen more to it. I love 'Any Given Day (Strangers Like Me)' and mention it as the best track of the album.
One of the best guitar works i've heard from Matheos...

thats good to know...i havent gotten the album yet...for some reason it seemed less compelling than the DT or the Redemption..probably because i wasnt such a fan of the previous 'a twist of fate' ...but it sounds like it might be something to hold me over another month in the wait for osi4.

I've been hooked in this album hardcore the past few weeks. It's all i listen to. I took me a while to really embrace the songs for some reason, now i love it. If it had some keyboards for atmospheric purposes, i would be going crazy over this album.

Someone pointed this out on the DT forums. It sounds like there are some issues with Matheos and Alder. Read the passage below from an interview done last month. Link: www.metalunderground.com/interviews/details.cfm?newsid=72770 Cowan: You originally approached Ray Alder to provide vocals, but he couldn’t commit the time. Was he too busy with Redemption? Matheos: It’s a little more complicated than that. I’m hesitant to talk about it. I want Ray to address that because it’s his deal. I think it’s a little more complicated than he was busy with Redemption. Cowan: Because you originally wanted to use Alder, did bringing in John Arch change your vision in any way? Matheos: It didn’t really. The whole thing started off as the first couple of songs were going to be for the next Fates Warning album, so it wasn’t really another project with Ray. It was another Fates Warning record. It became obvious that he wasn’t going to be able to do it. I thought the next best thing, since the music was leaning towards Fates Warning’s direction, would be to have John do it. He was the original singer. I always like to work with him when I have a chance. This time around, he seemed to be interested. He kind of comes in and out of the music business every couple of years. He seemed to have an itch to do something, so I played him some of the music. He was pretty inspired by it. Having said that, the first three songs, maybe thirty minutes of it, was already written before John even got involved. From there, it was just a question of continuing on with that feel that had been started already, so I don’t think it really changed the direction too much when he came in. Obviously, with him singing he had suggestions for changes as far as extending patterns, shortening patterns, maybe changing something here and there that would help him elaborate on his lyrics better or do something melodic that he wanted to do. Pretty much, we stayed the course from where I started it. Cowan: Speaking of Alder, have you heard his new Redemption album “This Mortal Coil?” Matheos: I have. Cowan: What did you think about it? Matheos: You know, that’s not really a fair question for me because I don’t really like that kind of music.

I dont usually like to comment this kind of thing but...that last line leaves me scratching my head a little. I mean I am not too crazy about hte last couple redemption albums myself but i mean...I remember a few years ago Nick Van Dyke wanted to perform some fates warning songs in their Origins tour but Ray told him that he just wanted it to be only Redemption and not do any FW tunes. In other words NIck is a huge fan of FW and i think its been a big influence which i certainly hear in his music. Then Jim comes a long and says he doesnt like that kind of music...WHAT kind of music??? `Prog-metal' ?? i mean what kind of music is Arch/Matheos then? I know what he means its different but...i gotta think its the same genre...
anyway ...the redemption thing has been kind of interesting and all...but ....i think its time for some fates warning again...I like having Arch back but i also love what Ray does. ahhhhhh

Samsara, who is a forum member here, said he reached out to Matheos this week for some reaction to the speculation that there is a possible beef between he and Ray or Nic Van Dyk. This is what Samsara said on the DT forums about it:
I got in touch with Jim yesterday in regard to this. He'd rather not go into it more publicly, but he did say that for the record:
"There is/was absolutely no drama between Ray and I (or Nick, who I consider a friend, and I)."
I was going to do a brief news story on this issue, but Jim didn't want to go on the record and comment any further other then to clarify that stuff between he and Ray and Nick is all fine.
So while that doesn't answer our question regarding Jim's comment, it does put to bed whether or not there is any issue between those guys. According to Jim, there isn't an issue or beef.

I was hesitant to get this album as I've never been a huge FW fan, but since so many people praised it I decided to listen through it. And I have to agree, it's really fantastic! Now I'm thinking perhaps I should go back and look into some older FW. Do you guys have any suggestions on what would be a good FW album to listen to if I really liked the Arch/Matheos album?

Personally my favorite FW album is hands down Perfect Symmetry. Amazing drumming from zonder, the tracks have this amazing energy and it has a fresh/underground/rebellious feel. This is why i love it the most. But on top of that it features Kevin Moore on the track 'At fates Hands' which released in 1989 i believe is considered the first 'prog metal' track ever released. Coincidence that pioneer kevin moore happens to be involved?? i don think so. I consider perfect symmetry up there with images and words and awake as one of the top albums in the genre.
hope you enjoy it!
p.s. "Parallels" is probably their most popular album, i like it too but i am not as crazy about it because i find it sounds a little overly commercial and lacking the raw energy symmetry.

Fates Warning, after Q'Ryche, were my 1st true prog metal passions. Great synopsis of the album, viv! Listen to him, he's right. The TRUE magic that graced my earphones way back when was "At Fates Hands." And, of course, realizing the name Kevin Moore of Dream Theater in the credits. It rang a bell 'cause Jim Matheos had worn a DT t-shirt on MTV during Headbangers Ball and i went right out and got WDADU as soon as i put it together! Look below for a great interview with Jim, Joe DiBiase and Frank Aresti on the album itself. To this day, FW remains my favorite band. Their repertoire has easily been one of the primary soundtracks of my life. Starting out I'd also pick up CHASING TIME and A PLEASANT SHADE OF GRAY too. The former (although very difficult to find) being a collection of their classic material pre-1995 and the latter being a masterpiece! Kevin is a hired hand on aPSoG but his work is unforgettable as we all know. It also features Arch/Matheos musicians Joey Vera on bass and Frank Aresti on guitars. Whichever you buy from our above choices I'm sure you'll be a happy listener. Enjoy!!

Thanks for teh response skno funny that you mention ryche. I almost added to my recommendation that in a verrrrrry watered down way Perfect Symmetry is to Parallels what MindCrime is to Empire, but its just on such a much lesser scale that i didnt bother. But i do find the albums similar, MindCrime is definitly one of my very faves of the genre, revolutionary energy of the 80s underground is unbeleivable and similar to what i mean about Symmetrys like hardcore industrial energy. Heres a great track: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHrLtkZgoHk

Words cannot describe how awesome this show will be!!! Not only will this be John Arch's 1st U.S. show since the 90s, get this.. The Original lineup of FATES may indeed REUNITE for encores! That would be: Joe DiBiase/bass, Jim Matheos/guitar, John Arch/vox, Victor Arduini/guitar & Steve Zimmerman/drums. This is the lineup heard on their 1st two releases on Metal Blade. Freedoms Reign and Enemy Remains are openers for Arch/Matheos and each band has one of those original members. Steve Zimmerman's Enemy Remains and Victor Arduini's Freedoms Reign. We heard about this last year when Jim & John were deciding on possible material to add in a headlining capacity since the A/M debut is but one hour's worth of material. Man, I am completely stoked for May now!!! @ 1:46
