This may be old news by now, but... Here's an interview with Ray Alder, where he is asked about O Chloroform: www.deadrhetoric.com/features/fates-warning-quite-a-bit-left-to-say/2/Key pieces here: Dead Rhetoric: Where are you going lyrically with “O, Chloroform?” Alder: That’s a funny one. It’s Kevin Moore’s lyrics. Go back to the Arch/Matheos thing, which at one point were supposed to be the songs for the new Fates Warning album but I didn’t work on them as much as I should, Kevin, Jim, and myself were working on a song, one of which ended up on the Arch/Matheos record. He had written lyrics for that and they were unused, and when we were doing this song, I had my melody, and Jim said, “What about Kevin’s lyrics?” He gave them to me, and the melody was put together and it fit perfectly. It took some weight off my back. It’s such a cool song, but I have no idea what the hell he’s talking about. Dead Rhetoric: It’s an unconventional song title, even for Fates Warning. Alder: I know what you mean. I know what chloroform is, but I don’t know what he’s talking about [laughs]. I should ask him, and every time I ask Jim, he tells me to ask Kevin, but good luck finding him. Dead Rhetoric: Where is he? In Turkey still? Alder: He’s in America now; he’s going to be a doctor. He’s in his third year of medical school. ---------------------------------------- Woah. If that is true, you'll have to change the name of this place to The DoctorMooreatorium. ;-)

Wow, that's big news. There's been speculation that kevin was studying medicine or was enrolled in a college, but we've never known for sure. Guess we know now! That's funny stuff about the lyrics too. I'll post a news item about this stuff tomorrow.

Awesome find there, wow! Thanks a lot for sharing. And VERY VERY weird too because earlier today I was listening to BLOOD by OSI and thinking about just that.. if Kevin did continue his interest in medicine. No kidding!! A few years ago, when he was still in St. Petersburg Florida, we had heard of this newfound pursuit of his but I can't recall the source. Maybe this is why Kevin moved to Iowa. For medical school. Kevin Moore, MD Next week's release will be well worth the wait! ;D

I just had the pleasure of listening to "O Chloroform." What an absolute trip. I never had such a fun time listening to song for the first time. I've never heard anyone but Kevin sing his lyrics before. Kevin's lyrics are often riddle-like and nonsensical delivered in a deadpan voice or sarcastic tone. But Ray's voice is so different. He sings with such emotion and seriousness. So we have an emotional and serious voice delivering riddle-like and nonsensical lyrics. It's such a contradiction that it's actually fascinating to hear and makes the song stand out. I freaking loved it!!!

Today while reading a Guardian article regarding children devastated by Syrian war i remembered "O Chloroform" and how some of the lines in the lyrics make sense regarding these refugees.
"Home on the border You can write yourself a letter Wave to the camera And keep your body warm
And no one takes over when you fall asleep Ten hours of eternity Tell yourself and call yourself a refugee We're suffering so long, so long"
The refugee camps are usually near boarders. Many of these refugees might write letters to human rights groups and politicians which will always fall on deaf ears. They wave to the camera when the journalist come to portray their condition. These refugees has no competition with each other and life because they have lost everything: no one takes over when you fall asleep (also a reference to the "The Tortoise and the Hare" allegory!) and they are suffering for a long time.
"See what you've done, holding your tongue Now tell me who's the delirious one So safe and warm o chloroform Keep us from coming around again"
In my opinion, this verse is speaking of how silence (ignoring the faults and not speaking the truth) in front of dictators and corrupt politicians will keep you disillusioned, "warm" and "safe", losing your judgment and imagination as under the influence of Chloroform; an allusion to the (in)direct influence of masses over their fate and what their governments do.
"That photograph tore you in half So the sane can escape the past True to form o chloroform Get the windows and the door"
Here again we can draw some characteristics of our species. Psychologically speaking, we are biased, ignorant, and always trying to find a way out (both physically and emotionally) for our survival.
"That photograph tore you in half so the sane can escape the past": a beautiful metaphor for a photograph that can tear a viewer in half (ruins of war or use of chemical weapons against people) so that politicians and governments can escape with that photo from the burden of their mistakes and operate to their benefits; or either a photograph one tears in half (a photo of your girlfriend, love, etc.) because of painful past memories.
These are my opinions regarding the lyrics.
