Definitely we need a Jim Matheos appreciation thread!
I like the way he uses dark intervals and unfamiliar arpeggios and brings them beautifully in his songs- you can listen to Arch/Matheos - Any Given Day at 7:10 minutes. His rhythm guitars are unique.
He's got so much feelings in his playing.
He's so much into chords and arpeggios and they are usually odd, dark, augmented or diminished sort of things.

I was fortunate to meet jim for a few seconds following the fates warning shows in hartford and nyc this weekend, and of course I had to ask an OSI question. I asked if anymore OSI albums were in the works and he said he "hopes" to make more. Unfortunately, he didn't say it's definitely happening or some tracks have already been written, which is the response I was hoping for. So I guess it remains to be seen.
I also asked him about whether Fates Warning would play A Pleasant Shade of Gray in its entirety again, and Ray heard that comment and gave me a thumbs up -- like he'd love for it to happen. Jim said he'd like to do that at some point, but was pretty vague and non-committal about that as well.
I guess his solo disc is next and we'll have to take it from there. No complaints here. Everything Jim touches is awesome, just like Kevin, so the solo disc will be terrific.

Show was fucking awesome. I also went to last night's show in amityville, which is super close to my house. I got one of the vip meet and greet tickets. The band went all out. Bobby wandered out before soundcheck and talked to the vip fans for a good half hour. He was a total open book. Then ray and jim came out for brief chats. Then they had soundcheck. Then more mingling and individual and group photos with the band. For anyone on the fence about getting the vip ticket, it was well worth it. What a special memory.
I asked jim about the solo album and he said it's "electronic," but not keyboards. He said it's more like guitar noises and sounds. Not like his past solo albums.

I saw FW last night at the DNA lounge in SF!! There were two opening bands that i skipped. fates went on around 9:30 and played till midnight. It was very surreal. There were only like 50 people max in the audience. When Ray was singing Monument and it got to the line "theres an empty room" he made a funny gesture and pointed at us...but it was a GREAT SHOW. Ray took a couple songs to get his settings completely dialed in. The whole thing was great. Pleasant Shade of grey tunes really worked and quitus was a personal highlight. Also i was delighted that they did wish which is another personal fave that worked surprisingly well live.
It was kind of sad trying to generate enough support for an encore with the few of us out there but they indeed came back and did possibly my favorite Fates Tune --or at least the track that got me hooked on them--Still Remains! Not only that but Frank Aresti came out of no where , jumped onto the stage to play it. I guess he lives in SF so he was in town...Very interesting to hear it without the keyboard. It also worked surprisingly well. Frank played some of the keyboard parts on his guitar. Wow what a show. My gf was like 'wow how do you know all the words and all these songs for this like random band' ...it was hard to explain that actually these guys are a huge deal for me and one of my favorite bands that iv listened to countless hours of their music over the last 7 years. That it was just strange that there were so few people and that it was such a small venue....i dont know....anyway it was great so i had to share.

Awesome! I knew two other people at the show last night. Samsara, a silent board member here, was there and at the VIP meet-and-greet. I agree, it was weird seeing Fates with such small crowds. The crowd at their hometown show was easily 3-4 times bigger than the two other shows I went to. But at the same time, it was nice seeing them in such an intimate setting. It almost felt like they were playing a small private show just for us, lol. That's nice that your gf goes with you. I'm jealous!

Although I received CD in mail earlier today anyone can hear entire album on Jim's page at SoundCloud. Jim's press release from last month ( Press release) is all that entails the liner notes btw.. Jim's SoundCloud page

I was listening to some Matheos solo material this past weekend, and I forgot how much I freaking love his first two solo albums with all the acoustic stuff and violins on it. So good. It make me secretly wish for a Matheos/Moore short tour in which Jim opens with a set of acoustic material from his solo albums, then a short break, then Kevin performs a set of his solo and Chroma Key material, then they close the show on stage together with an OSI set.
