Partly because I've been kinda inspired by this site, I went back and listened to You Go Now the other day. And it got me thinking about how the Chroma Key stuff is really quite different from OSI, and everything is completely different to the stuff he did on DT's first three albums. And then I thought about how it would be cool if there was a new Kevin Moore fan site where I could bring up this topic for discussion.
So, out of the three main projects Kevin Moore's been involved in (DT, Chroma Key and OSI), what's your personal favourite? And is there one that you dislike?
My favourite is probably Chroma Key. Largely because of Dead Air for Radios, which is just a gorgeous album.
And I don't really like When Dream and Day Unite. But that's more because of the production on the album than anything to do with Kevin's keys.

omg... its tough question... really... i mean DT's Images & Words and Awake are on my top list of my favorite discs... i really love "Learning To Live" keyboard solo, and specially love "Surrounded" and "Wait For Sleep" and "Space-Dye Vest" is still my favorite song of DT... on the other hand i love all the stuff he did with Chroma Key and Graveyard Mountain Home is my fav album (all because "White Robe")... so i'll stick to Chroma Key

Great question. My favorite song of all-time is "Space-Dye Vest," so I'd have to say that will always be my single most favorite Kmo creation. That song is just so emotionally powerful it's ridiculous. I'm not afraid to say it has brought a tear to my eye on occasion when im feelin down. My favorite Kmo album is probably Awake, although OSI 1 is very very close behind. I'll never forget the first time I was about to pop in OSI 1 when i purchased it. i had no idea what to expect. And when the New Math/OSI played, I was freakin blown away. the blend of prog metal with Kmo's unique voice was better than sex!

I have to say that my favorite recording Kevin has done is You Go Now. I love how the album just flows. It is like a complete ride. I love the space theme too (I'm studying to be an astronomer). Plus that album is special to me for personal reasons as well. But I love all of his stuff. OSI is a great outlet as well for Kevin. I'd love to see them try to tour. ---------- Chroma Key/Kevin Moore tribute site on My Space www.myspace.com/songsforthesad

the best kevin's song for me is Space dye vest. One of my best song of ever. Since Kevin left Dream Theater, they have never been able to create another song with the same feeling. They tried many times, but SDV is definitely "above"

@ thateffinmouse: YOUR MySpace page was long overdue itself! GREAT JOB FELLOW KMOFAN! ;D Oh! My vote for fave project? ALL DUH!! if i had to pick just one, i'd say CK's "Dead Air for Radios." There was something TOTALLY separate than what DT or alotta other bands were doing at the time. Kevin had an awesome band for that studio experience also.. DAFR!

I was thinking about this topic today and decided that A Pleasant Shade of Gray needs to be high on Kevin's list of top projects. No, he didn't write the material, but it's a brilliant album, in my opinion. If I were ranking KEv projects, I'd go:
1) Awake (mainly because of Space-Dye Vest) 2) OSI 1 3) A Pleasant Shade of Gray 4) Dead Air for Radios 5) Hmm.... a toss up between Free/I&W/Blood

if we're talking about rankings mine will be:
1) Awake (yeah... Space-Dye Vest did the job) 2) Graveyard Mountain Home (mostly beacuse Give Up-White Robe killer combo and Sad Sad Movie) 3) Ghost Book: soundtrack to the film Okul (that's the soundtrack of my life) 4) Images & Words (Love Surrounded) 5) all the other albums xD
and yeah... it's hard to think in moments like this u.u!!!

My ranking...
1) DT - Images and Words (the best album ever made IMO... A Masterpiece) 2) OSI - Blood 3) DT - Awake (Not only is SDV the best song ever, but all the details Kevin added to this album is pure genius. Even tho he wasn't that integral in the writing prosess on the album itself, it is another masterpiece from DT). 4) CK - Dead Air for Radios 5) OSI - Office of Strategic Influence
And I must add that Kevin is one of my favorite solo-keyboardists as well. The solos he did in DT are mindblowing. That pitch bend technique is just the best.... Just listen to the Take the Time solo, and you'll know what I'm talking about...

Really interesting seeing all of the rankings. Probably my favorite DT kev songs is "Only a Matter of Time" from When Dream And Day Unite. If you ever seen the DVD "When Dream and Day -Re-unite", they have a classic interview with the band explaining each song. Kevin gives a pretty good (and a little humorous) explanation of the song's meaning.

Yeah, the "When Dream and Day -Re-unite" DVD is cool. It's great to hear Kev explaining the lyrics he wrote. About the bear... and the band... Only a Matter of Time is awesome, but has never been recorded the way it deserves (I don't like the production on WDADU, and LaBrie has never been able to sing it very well live IMO)

My favourite project is still definitely Chroma Key. All three studio albums have been fantastic, and on top of that all three have been very individualistic and had their own strong points. My faovurite of the three is probably slightly Graveyard Mountain Home because I am a computer music programmer and Kevin's ability to layer sounds on that album always blows my mind. Genius.

You're all drunk Dream Theater come nowhere near Chroma Key or OSI, I think. My favorites these last years have been Re:Free and Memory Hole. I often listen to The Chroma Key albums too but I never go back for Dream Theater. I think Space Dye-Vest is a bit too pretentious (and Labrie stinks).

I agree about Surrounded. Kevin really wrote some epic lyrics in Only a Matter of Time and Surrounded. Surrounded is such a beautiful and powerful song. I think it's a really underrated DT song because that album is stacked with incredible tunes.
