So i am creating a thread dedicated to the discussion that was started in the random lyrics thread about recurring themes and possible connections.
to summarize we have identified a few themes:
waves, phones, west, radios (maybe missing some if so sorry please add)
And we have speculated as to the connection and similarity between the Escape artist lyrics and Astronaut Down(see pg 4 random Lyrics thread).
Now , i have just been speculating on another possible connection:
Even the waves
RadioLogue
what do you think? Seems to me there are some similarities.

I love this thread! My favorite thing is to anaylyze kevin's lyrics. this is an interesting connection between even thet waves and radiologue. there is definitely a theme of being "lost at sea" while heading "west." wow. again, i think any similarities in lyrics are purely subsconscious by kevin and not intentional. but it's fascinating to find these links. im still not sure what even the waves is about tho. are there biblical referrences with the names?

Mebert- I love wow. again, i think any similarities in lyrics are purely subsconscious by kevin and not intentional. I dont know. A week ago i was inclined to agree with you but i am starting to get a real sense that he is telling a story. In very light brushstrokes. Like a Watercolor paining you get these images and sort of fading definitions. "it sounds like water color" (If only we could ask him!!)I have been thinking about these lines even the waves: Radio I find this very intriguing!

I actually thought there was a connectiuon between Our Town and Blood. Our Town has the line: "If there's still blood left in your body, I'll come back home."
And Blood has that line about tracing veins and shooting blood back into the body. Also in Blood, someone tells him: "Don't come home."

interesting: i agree that does seem to be referencing the same or a similar idea. There is definitely a blood theme. btw i think i edited my last post a couple times while you were writing your post..

wow. yea, i see your edits. there's is definitely a pattern there with the # of days - 30 and 40. good catch! and being lost at sea while heading west. i just dont totally understand what even the waves is about. why does the name change from judas to jonas to joseph?

"keep it up u're doing fine, well i thought i was fine..." xD

But judas, jonas and joseph. arent those names from the bible? maybe this song has religious overtones.

i just dont totally understand what even the waves is about. why does the name change from judas to jonas to joseph? yea i dont totally understand either. I am kind of playing with the idea that the waves are like radio waves or communication waves of some sort. This would sort of bring together the wave, phone, radio themes. The judas, jonas joseph stuff--yea i think it must be biblical, he has some other biblical references in other songs (for example hollow and the choice to cover the elliot smith song). I dont know enough(or in fact anything) about the bible to piece this part together though so if anyone can shed some light here that would be really cool! Edit: by the way, the 30 and 40 day stuff, i just noticed it, but i really have no idea what exactly its referring to. Idea: maybe the 30 days is actually referring to the same person that has been waiting for 40 days?? the 40 day waiter has a dream that he was heading west 30 days ago?? man its just so interesting how the new lyrics sort of tie in with the developed themes. I guess what makes it even more tantalizing is that Kevin has said in a few interviews that he was much more deliberate about the lyrics for Blood than the previous OSI albums.

well... after staying all day thinking about it... i just come with this idea... he's lost (obviously) and the "sea" is a metaphor (obviously)... so i guess that Kev (or the guy who the song talks about) is so fucking desperate and he wants to find answer everywhere and he probably is searching for them in the Bible... i'm not sure about this tho!

holy shit. i'm listening to OSI1 at work and I just got up to "Memory, Daydreams Lapses." More boat references!!
"Down in the boat, it was strange not to know what to say. Thought we would float, but the rain didn't come anyway."
Also, what about the song "Bigger Wave"? What the heck is going on with all the boat/sea/wave referrences. I might be stretching it now, there's deff more of a connection between Even the Waves and Radiologue then all thee other songs.

Also to consider, the title "Dead air for Radios" and the song S.O.S

You have definitely given me more to chew on here Mebert:
Memories Daydreams:
Bigger Wave:
OK i tried to bold the word *Line* in both passages. I think its kind of interesting that it appears in both.
Also i think the cover of Dead Air for Radios might be a clue

take this from "Roll Away The Stone":
"watch me float out from the sea, moon is you and you are me, this is all you need to know, something passes let it go..."
another sea reference =P

ok i think i might be mistaken about S.O.S fitting into the sailing theme.
Man i wish we could ask Kevin some questions. Any chance we could interview him Mebert??

oh man. lol. to be honest, i dont think i wanna interview kevin. not yet at least. he is so publicity shy it seems, that i think he'd hate the idea of this website. i'd rather just keep interviewing the people around kevin for the time being. maybe when his next album comes out i'll feel like the time is right. i'd definitely want to do it over the phone and record it so i can ask follow up questions and have it more conversational. and i'd need at least an hour. i feel like there's so much ground to cover.
anyway, back to the thread. i was thinking. what kind of boats use a radio log? not all boats. is it like war vessels? i'm not familiar with boats.
with regard to even the waves, i actually feel like its a story about a man at odds with his faith because of the biblical names. i seem to remember an interview where kevin said he grew up in a very religious household? i have to look it up and see if i can find out. at the time, he was takinga risk musically and career-wise so maybe his conservative family was trying to pull him down a more safe path. so the risk-taking kevin was "lost at sea"with faith. his family was calling him crazy for his decisions. he said, "may be lost, but i'm not crazy."

yea i had concluded that he had been exposed to some religion. If you could find the interview though it would be great.
theres a definite story he is painting. Always waves and sea and boats but never wind. And it seems like the person was planning on being back. Coming back like regularly. And why would there be waiting?
uggg i just thought of another connection...
colorblind
6:00
This one seems like it could be subconscious though i find 6:00 rather specific. its kind of neat how he has these themes that continue on throughout his different ensembles.

The lyric "i feel like an astronaut in a submarine" (probably my favorite lyric ever) came into my mind while reading this. Submarines would have radio logs, I'd imagine.
