I understand his lyrics perfectly.
There was a member of my garage band back when we were late teens. We had a member
just up and quit and stop talking to us for years. He wrote some of our best stuff. I saw him years later and he wasn't interested in music anymore and finally got an explanation. Below is how things played out with him.
Once you know the scene all the lyrics fall together and make perfect sense.
Religious family.
Interested in music because someone you have a crush on does
Improve to impress that person
Dreams of a life with that person
That person gets a steady lover, talks marriage
Write bitter lyrics
Quit
Ignore the other band members because the situation was very emotional
Move away to get far from the situation
A Rob Halford of keyboardists that is shy and brought up by an overly religious family. He keeps on running to be comfortable in his own skin. Think of it in that situation without giving me a hard time. It fits.
"so i tell myself in a daydream trance
when i wake back up give me half a chance
then a girl showed up (she was heaven sent)
so i sent her back (wasn't what i meant)"
""Do you like women?"
"Yip."
"Do you like women as people?"
"Yes, I mean uh... I don't see um... apart from... in the realms of pathology
how one could feel otherwise. Um, the biological needed dependency to know
women is
basic... There are, there are, I've met men who don't like women,
but they seem to be extreme cases. I think you can like women in um... without,
without being a model of um
... without feeling a great pressure
...""
"'I've been thinking take up drinking
throw a few bad years away
keep redialing and wake up smiling
maybe he'll be in today
gimme that ol' time religion yeah
gimme that ol' time religion yeah
"
"...I confess, I confess... I confess and I apologize in advance too. I
apologize in advance for unforseen sins forthcoming. I apologize for
unforseen sins of the forces of the foreskin. I couldn't have forseen they
were forthcoming and, and since it was the fourth time and since him being
the only one on the scene for a sin, forsooth, so lowly, on second sight on
my part, Lord, just call me
"
DT Lyrics
"We fabricate our demons
Invite them into our homes
Have supper with the aliens
And fight the war alone
We conjure up our skeletons
Enlist the den of thieves
Frightened from our closets
Then sewn upon our sleeves"And the cold hard look in your eyes
Is more than a line in the sandWhen the truth gets hard to imagine
The hours get harder to stand"
