Well, I'm a person that likes depressing lyrics. But that's just me. I'm a glass-half-empty person. So the Redemption lyrics are exactly what I like, lol. My fav song ever is Space-Dye Vest, which is perhaps the most depressing lyrics you could find. lol

So, I had been going through a difficult past couple of weeks and for some reason the only CD that helped to comfort me was Redemption's The Origins of Ruin. It was perfect. The lyrics are amazing and I really connected with them. I emailed Nick van Dyk to thank him and tell him the impact the music had on me, and he replied today. I was very excited. Here's what he said:
"Michael -
Thanks so much for reaching out to me. It is a risk being soul-baring in lyrics, but the payoff is connecting with somebody like you and helping them understand that others have felt the same way.
I am sure you will make it through whatever challenges you now confront, and will be stronger for the journey. Hang in there!
I greatly appreciate your interest and support.
Best regards,
Nick"

Thanks Mebert--you have renewed my appreciation for this album I think its my favorite. It combines each of what i loved about the first 2 albums and is yet more than their sum.

Redemption update!!!
Hello everyone. Time for a long overdue update on a few things! So sit down with this when you’ve got a few minutes…it’s an extensive update!
First off, we are hard at work in pre-production for our upcoming fifth studio CD, which carries the working title of This Mortal Coil.
The band was really happy with Snowfall on Judgment Day and so when it came time to put together new material, with our own expectations for ourselves always on the rise, we gave a lot of thought to how to deliver the goods and step up our game yet again.
We have worked well with some excellent producers in the past and they have put their mark on our sound, especially Tommy Newton with whom we did two records and who we tried to involve early enough in the production process to help shape the records. But even with Tommy, most of the involvement came after we were finished with songs.
For this record, I thought we could bring in an outside producer very early on. Someone to help shape the music and raise the bar for us, challenging our ideas and getting the best from the band. I knew I wanted somebody with a depth of experience that reflected the many things Redemption pursues in its music: melodic but heavy; intricate and complex when called for, but accessible; a bit of virtuosity but always in the service of the song. This is a tall order, when you think about it. We would need a producer, ideally, who had extensive experience in pop music but also maybe jazz fusion, had worked with somebody like Kansas, had worked with somebody like Nevermore, had extensive experience in heavy technical music (like, say, Spiral Architect or even somebody like Nile) and hopefully also had particular domain expertise in prog metal (maybe someone like Queensryche).
Fortunately, such a producer exists! I am delighted to announce that we will be working on This Mortal Coil with Neil Kernon, whose extensive CV includes all of those bands. He has immense experience in song craft, creating compelling intricate music across a variety of genres. It’s a great fit for what we are looking for right now. He is, simply put, a legendary producer and we are really fired up to work with him.
Neil and I have known each other socially for several years, and actually about three years ago he called me and asked if Redemption would be interested in creating a “Rage for Order for the next century.” Uh, YES, we would! However, at that time, we were already down the road withSnowfall on Judgment Day so I explained that we would have to table the conversation until the next record. And then, of course, I had to take a little time off for my medical adventure (I’ll provide an update on this below…things look good, though).
So when the time came to consider how to make sure our next CD is our best (a goal we will always have!) I thought immediately back to that conversation. And as Neil and I spoke about the possibilities, it became obvious to us both that this could be a very special opportunity to make a really great CD. So we are really going to dig into pre-production together beginning just a few weeks from now and needless to say, I’m really looking forward to it!
I’ve been working on the basic structure of the songs for a couple of months now, and the band is very pleased with how things are coming together. We are taking more time to explore different drum parts than we have done before, and working out bass and drum parts together in a more organic way than we have had the luxury of doing in the past.
So the songs are in a bit of flux now, but at this point it looks like we will have ten or eleven tracks, with a fair amount of compositional diversity between them but all having the strong melody, the aggressive riffing and the sense of emotional and musical urgency that we hope is core to all of Redemption’s music. Some of the working titles include Noonday Devil, No Tickets to the Funeral, Rain in my Soul, Focus, Dreams from the Pit, Path of the Tornado, Blink of an Eye, Perfect, and Departure of the Pale Horse. This is not a rock opera but the songs are tied together, loosely, by the theme of confronting our mortality. You can imagine, given my medical adventure, that what I experienced would make its way into my songwriting.
After pre-production, we’ll get to tracking and mixing and all that good stuff. We are shooting for a fall release date, assuming all goes well. We’re also planning some pretty extensive and cool bonus materials, which will be fun to do and which we think our fans will really enjoy.
We also have some tentative plans right now to play out a bit more extensively than we did on the last CD in support of the record, and as things firm up I’ll be sure to let you know.
Finally, for those of you interested in the latest on my health, I continue to follow the very aggressive protocol of my brilliant doctor, Dr. Bart Barlogie, who is quite literally saving the lives of people diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma – he’s the only doctor in the world who believes it can be cured. As of now, I remain in complete remission and have been there for around fifteen months. If I make it thirty six months, Bart’s data shows I am almost certainly cured. So I continue to take three nasty meds to (hopefully) ensure I remain in remission. The odds at this point are very much in my favor. Incidentally, I have a different blood cancer than what Nergal of Behemoth is battling, but a small part of the aggressive protocol I underwent consistent of two blood stem cell transplants that Nergal recently underwent.
So that’s it: healthy, working on new music with a great producer, and ready to deliver the goods! (And on that note, by the way, Neil has also worked with Judas Priest – haha).
Thanks, as always, for your interest and support!
Best,
Nick

Wow, so I did some research and apparently Redemption won a songwriting contest in 2003 coordinated by Dream Theater jus tbefore they released their Train of Thought album. The contest gave time signatures and key changes, etc., of the DT's "Stream of Consciousness" before the album was released and people submitted their take on what the song would sound like. Redemption was one of the winners. Here's their version:

YEa Also the way the song ends--it goes into a theme from a song from their first self titled album. I always thought that the SOC song was some kind of return to earlier ideas but actually IT IS EARLIER IDEAS. hahahah

Am loving it too! Ray's delivery just never seems to get old. His voice has literally been the soundtrack to my life in many ways over the years. Not only do I need to pre-order this CD but also new Steven Wilson. This entire Summer/early Fall is just nutso w/ all the CDs I've been pre-ordering. Christmas in July, August..as it were!

Here's a review of the Redemption album by a moderator at the DT forums. He seems to agree with you, viv, in saying that in sounds like typical Redemption -- which is good, just not new. Link: www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=26935.msg1050311#newSince 2003 Redemption have delivered biannual goodness to the progressive metal world. Like clockwork the band has stuck to their schedule and Redemption are set to release a follow up to 2009’s Snowfall on Judgment Day. While an album every other year may not seem too impressive, one must explore some events that have transpired in the last three years. Redemption’s mastermind and composer Nick van Dyk was diagnosed with blood cancer, and given five years to live. Nick went into an aggressive treatment, and now looks to be a lucky man, likely cured of his disease. These events might have brought many people’s production to a screeching halt, but with Nick it seems to have only brought inspiration. Though not written directly about Nick’s battle with cancer, This Mortal Coil explores the most serious topic associated with it; our mortality and the fact that one day we will all face it. While lyrically content may have changed, musically I don’t think many will be scratching their heads wondering what band this is. Redemption seems to have carved out their own little niche in the progressive metal world, setting themselves apart from many other bands in the genre. However I think for the first time with This Mortal Coil that perhaps the band is getting a bit too comfortable in their corner. With this album I find myself thinking I’ve heard things before, with sections of “Dreams From the Pit” sounding eerily like a song on a previous album. Neil Kernon who recorded and mixed the album seems to have made this album sound a tad dryer than the previous two, leading to a small hint of staleness in the final product. Despite these complaints This Mortal Coil delivers in a variety of ways. If you liked Redemption before then chances are you’re going to like this album. Nick’s signature songwriting is still strong and tracks like “Path of the Whirlwind” and “Blink of an Eye” still bring the intense riffs and energy Redemption fans have come to expect. “Let it Rain” and “Focus” feature some fantastic keyboard and piano playing, a nice counterpunch to the often guitar driven arrangements. And it’s certainly nice to hear another strong vocal performance from Ray Alder since the new Fates Warning album has taken a back seat once again, this time to the new Arch/Matheos project. Of particular enjoying are his more soaring vocals on “Perfect”. This Mortal Coil features a good group of musicians led by a masterful songwriter, but it just seems to lack some of the pop of earlier Redemption. Songs on the album don’t pop out against one another, and as a whole they don’t stick with you as well as songs from previous albums have. However if I was let down by this album it’s only because of Redemption’s record of excellence. The only time anyone is going to complain about getting a silver medal is if they’ve gotten used to a regular string of gold medals. There is a ton of good material on this record, but you might just have a little harder time accessing it. Nick’s Rating 8.5/10
