I have become ENAMORED with anything Steven Wilson touches. I'm watching Insurgentes right now, and it's a stellar look at the inside of his mind and style. I've been picking up earlier works of Porcupine Tree, getting the deluxe digipak of Stupid Dream for Christmas. He said this is a big year coming up! In a recent post he mentioned a new Blackfield album (with a revamped site too), a tour, tons of other stuff as well!
Have any of y'all seen Insurgentes? What are your favorite Steven Wilson projects?

YES!!! Man, I love his work. I first got into his stuff through Porcupine Tree. I saw them live on The Incident tour; it was a top-notch show, cracking visuals and really good sound, although Steve didn't seem particularly comfortable being a frontman, at least, not compared to Mikael Akerfeldt or Devin Townsend.
Insurgentes (the film and album) are top-notch material. It's one of my favourite albums of the last few years, and as you say the film is really well-done - a great view into a great mind, if a bit short. Of his upcoming albums, I'm probably least excited by Blackfield III, although I'll definitely go and see them. His second solo album (a double album!) is coming out in September, which sounds like it's going to be really diverse (it has a 20 minute prog song on it, among other things), and he's said he wants to tour the material if possible, although in the last interview I saw he didn't seem to know who would be in the live band or anything, but he definitely wants to tour the material. The really exciting release, I think, is Storm Corrosion, because I know what Blackfield III will sound like, I vaguely know what his second solo album will sound like, but I have no idea what Storm Corrosion will sound like.
As for favourite project, I dunno... I love Porcupine Tree, but I probably wouldn't say that. Insurgentes is probably my favourite, followed by Bass Communion and then Porcupine Tree. I love Molotov and Haze.

I dig Porcupine Tree over most of his other stuff, but he is a genius. Fave PT is Lightbulb Sun through In Absentia. Blackfield and his solo stuff (and cover versions) are more interesting to me than No-Man, IEM, and Bass Communion & other ambient stuff (there are tons of other bands doing it better)... but again, I think it's all pretty damn rad. ~Dan

Oh, and Opeth's Blackwater Park (produced by SW) is probably one of the best progressive death metal albums EVER!!

Somehow I managed to not hear about Insurgentes until now, I'll definitely need to look into that. I'm trying not to be unreasonably excited about Storm Corrosion, but it's not going so well.

Insurgentes is a cracking album - first I found some parts (mainly the noise sections) to be too weird for my liking, but I stuck with it, and I just love it.
If I recall correctly, a rather funny set of instruments are being used for Storm Corrosion. There's guitars, keyboards, percussion, vocals, but no drums. And an orchestra - I think SW specifically mentioned there were a lot of string and woodwind parts. I'm not sure what kind of music you can make with that specific set of instruments - maybe some high-budget krautrock?

I too had differing thoughts in Insurgentes. There's one track in the middle, something about in the courts of someone, that I don't particularly care for. The rest sounds like the more mellow Porcupine Tree or Blackfield in places. Alright, now we're talking!! Speaking of krautrock, I love Kraftwerk. Still building up my collection of their back catalog (or should I say "catelogue").

I am a big Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson fan. Pretty much everythinghe does is good. I am really digging his Cover Version disks. Today I received the CD Leader of the Starry Skies - A tribute to Tim Smith. Steven covers a song called Stone Age Dinosaurs. It is another great cover song. I am going to have to download the original to compare. I really like it a lot.

Thanks for tip! Great tune here ;D
Btw, new SW post on fb is really interesting:
My second solo album is nearing completion. It will be in the form of 2 separate 40 minute albums released in the same 2 CD set, and will also come as a blu-ray with surround mix, high definition stereo and a lot of visual material (Lasse is already working hard on films for many of the songs, attached is a still from one of these we shot a couple of weeks ago to a song called "Index"). We're also planning a special Insurgentes style hard back book edition with a full length bonus CD of additional material. A year in the making, this is without doubt my biggest project to date, perhaps my most ambitious and personal music, and with some phenomenal musicians and performances on it (drummer Nic France in particular is going to blow a lot of people away). We hope a website will launch around April/May to start previewing material, with the album scheduled for September. More soon....

Do you suppose "full length bonus CD" mean another album's worth of material? Is the special edition effectively a triple album??

Yes I do believe so too, una. Judging from his, "Insurgentes" bonus material along with Porcupine Tree's, "The Incident" extras it should be quite noteworthy indeed. As for the latter? Black Dahlia, Flicker, etc. all were so amazing as were his solo bonus tracks. Puncture Wound rules!

Didn't know where else to share this! It was linked on SW's facebook page anyway. He/they wrote: I'm pretty blown away with this mix of 40 different cover versions of Trains on youtube - beautifully done, check it out!
It's really incredible what fans can put together. A Chroma Key tune is begging for this kind of treatment! Just love seeing how young many of these contributors were also. Such a beautiful song and you can easily hear that when you play this ..
