OK...whats the deal i just heard some tracks from the new album--omg i cant take it... so i went back and listened to their older stuff and had a blast like rage for order...some of it is so good. My understanding was always that DeGarmo crippled them by leaving but then i was always confused because a lot of people said tribe and Here in the Now Frontier were terrible. Looking into it a little closer Degarmo wasnt actually a member of the band at the time when he appeared on Tribe--which turns out is a pretty decent album actually. Did a little more digging and it seems that Here in the now frontier was the last thing Degarmo did with them before he left. Looked it up and it seems from the credits its one of the more Degarmo written albums they did so i am listening to it now and its actually pretty good, i like it! anyway i know there are some ryche fans here that probably know a lot more than i do about the situation...

Don't even get me started on QR. They were my fav band growing up and i even have a giant poster of the Promised Land cover above the stairway in my apartment. I'm a member of the forum at anybodylistening.net/breakdownroom and there's a lot of good chatter there about QR. Seems like Geoff is the one in control and his wife is the manager. Geoff picks the type of music he wants and the other guys go along with it. They dont even write their own songs anymore. they hire outside writers. It's become like the Geoff Tate solo band under the name QR. A month ago, Michael Wilton was reportedly "liking" comments on Facebook that fans left asking where the guitar parts were on the new album and he gave really half-hearted responses in interview. QR made him come out with a statement on the official website saying he's 100% on board with the direction of the album. The whole thing is a mess. And don't even get me started on the trashy cabaret show tour they had last year that included Geoff's wife and daughter as a dancer. He also hired his daughter's 22-yo ex-fiance as the band's guitarist instead of getting a legit musician. Anyway, this is a pretty interesting interview with Geoff that was released this week: www.bravewords.com/news/165041

Well, degarmo and wilton actually performed together with two other seattle musicians at a half-time show of the seattle seahwaks playoff game earlier this year. you can find videos on youtube. i think he does music related things here and there, but nothing big from what i've read. But I think QR has changed so much since he left that even his return wouldnt fix things in my opinion. They've been a band more years without him, than with him. They dont even write their own music anymore. They hire outside writers. It just sounds like the whole balance of power in the band is off, according to what knowledgable people say at the BDR forum. sounds like geoff and his family have such a stranglehold on the band now. it's not the QR we used to know. if you read that article above, geoff says he doesnt even enjoy listening to The Warning or Mindcrime now because his tastes and ideas have changed.

yea i read it. I find i am always impressed by Tate when he speaks. It just doesnt translate over into the music... basically i appreciate the way he thinks about music and approaches it....but not really the thing that comes out. He seems to be really into exploring himself and very inward looking which is kind of interesting...i respect that he cant imagine quitting as well...but i just wish they would do something again that i actually like...and sorry i dont think i will EVER enjoy mindcrime part 2....
it was really interesting to me that he expressed his distaste for DT... you can find vis on you tube of those bands performing together and it sounding really pretty good. I kind of think Tatte kind of takes it to another place on spirit carries--he does have a great voice...just seems a little tasteless or something...

Don't even get me started on QR. They were my fav band growing up... Mike, I know exactly how you feel. I, too, had a fanboy crush on QR in the worst way. Although it was Def Leppard who were my 1st fave band, as soon as I received RAGE FOR ORDER in 1986 I became a TOTAL stalwart for the 'Ryche. There was an all ages hard rock/metal venue near the airport on the south side of Milwaukee my friends and I used to visit on the weekends in HS where bands would play. There was a great QR tribute band we used to check out all the time too! Two of my best concert experiences were QR opening up for AC/DC on the Rage tour and for Metallica on the Mindcrime/..And Justice For All tour. It was so intense!! Neck hurt for 2 days! lol Last time i saw QR was 3 summers ago. They ALL sounded great, still, yet fans like me only cheered for the older material.. Well, needless to say, after Hear in the Now Frontier was released I lost interest. Their last great album, to me, was Promised Land. It's truly appalling what has become of their music, I agree. And I had no idea Tate had taken the reins w/ their music either. About DeGarmo? I had no idea, other than what Mike posted about that Seahawks halftime show which was a pretty sweet medley actually! From DeGarmo's Wikipedia: On February 18, 2005, DeGarmo joined the remaining members of the popular rock band Alice in Chains and other Seattle area artists for the Tsunami Continued Care Relief Concert. His most recent studio work involved assisting the rock band Dredg for the production and arrangement of their 2005 studio album Catch Without Arms. DeGarmo currently lives in the Seattle area with his wife and children, and works full time as a professional pilot. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot certificate, Hawker (HS125), IA-Jet and Learjet 45 type ratings from the FAA.Yes, it's true. He's a full time pilot! Makes sense. He grew up near Seattle. "Jet City", as it were, eh?! PS: There is only one band I've loved since 80s/90s that's still a personal favorite and that's Fates Warning.

you hated HITNF Sknobird? i cant stand the title but i listened to a couple tracks and it didnt sound all that bad..no where near their latest offerings at least.
Mebert- yea what the hell?? ....i give up, Tate just seems like he has a big ego and a lot of $$ enough to just do what he wants and has no problem with criticism since he firmly believes hes some kind of prog Van Gogh...

Thanks for starting this thread! BTW, that Tshirt "collectible" is pretty tasteless. Unreal. Sure I'm glad I kept my Mindcrime Tshirt all these years but seeing that other one makes me squirm w/ discontent..
Yeah, viv, idk it's weird. I honestly played HiTNF maybe 2-3 times. Same goes for last 2 DT records to be honest! I have lotta old vinyl, posters, magazines, articles, cd singles from the "old days" which i treasure tho! Even a MINDCRIME/EMPIRE-era comic book! lol

I disagree with most of what is beeing said here. Queensryche is doing what every self-respecting band/musician needs to do, namely to challenge themselves. So what if its no longer "metal" or "prog-metal"? People who criticize them seem to be stuck in an Iron Maiden or DT-modus of listening, which excludes most of what music is all about.
I was actually close to "giving them up" with OMII and American Soldier, but then came DTC, their best record since 1994.
Just a pity that Tate & Co. seem to have outgrown their own audience.

I mean....you post that here??? on a Kevin Moore site? I dont think that anyone who is interested enough in chroma key and OSI and Kevin Moores music is 'stuck' in any mode of listening...its also strange because the bands you mention specifically, Iron Maiden and DT both had pretty great albums recently. I am not a huge DT fan, in fact i dislike most of their stuff since kevin left, but i do enjoy maiden...i also enjoy jazz and classical music as well....and i love Mindcrime. It was just an awesome album that captured this great energy that was out there in 1989. But come on...how can you say we are unreasonable for criticizing?? I dont think it has anything to do with genre... I tried to listen to their recent album....i couldnt...i couldnt even do it...i enjoy their earlier material, like I only dream in infrared etc...but event that stuff gets border line over the top. MC they absolutely nailed it.... anyway, its interesting to me that there still are ryche fans out there(are you actually in the band or related to the members?? ). My only point is that i dont think too many people on this forum are just die hard prog metal zealots...in fact its quite the opposite....otherwise we wouldnt have enjoyed chroma key.

I didn't call you "prog metal zealots," did I? I'm just amazed that no one likes DTC except me.
And no, I have nothing to do with the band. I'm not even on the same continent.

I was surprised to see you rank DTC as their best since 1994, pink! Most people I've spoken with don't seem to like it, but that's cool that you do. I LOVE the song "Big Noize," but I didn't care for much else on the album unfortunately.
Speaking of QR, i was actually ranking my Top 10 favorite albums of all-time, and it turns out that QR appears twice in that list: Empire and Promised Land. Damn, those albums were soooo good.

Big Noize is also one of my favorites!
In my opinion Promised land stands as Queensryche's peak. A certain period of confusion or disappointment usually (always?) follows. It happened to Fates after Parallels and with DT after Awake.
Or?

...but then came DTC, their best record since 1994. I had to check this out...I stopped listening after Hear in the Now Frontier. You must be joking. Yes, there are some likeable moments here...but the best??? You seem to have a lovely taste in music (enjoying your blog, thank you) and a great sense of humor. So, seriously what's their best after 1997?
