Hey, everyone! This has been a terrific year for new progressive rock and metal music, so I'm working on ranking my 10 favorite albums of 2013. I'm still tweaking the order, but here's my current list and a stand-out song from each album. What's your list?
1) Tesseract - Altered State
2) Haken - The Mountain
3) Dream Theater - Dream Theater
4) Fates Warning - Darkness In A Different Light
5) Scale the Summit - The Migration
6) Queensrÿche - Queensrÿche
7) James LaBrie - Impermanent Resonance
8) The Winery Dogs - The Winery Dogs
9) Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing
10) Chaos Venture - Chaos Venture 1.0 (feat. Kevin Moore)

its been a rough year prog-wise for me in a way. The three originators of prog-metal released albums, 2 of which were self titled and none really blew me away. So i got all the albums i asked for but still wasnt in prog-transcendental-bliss.
Fates Warning:Darkness in a Different Light -- probably the one iv listened to the most so i guess its my number one. O Chloroform and Yet it Moves are great tracks but also i enjoy Lighthouse quite a bit.
Dream Theater: Dream Theater -- decent album continuing in the same vein as the previous ADTOE. Clean sound and melodic. It is probably more consistent than the previous album but ADTOE had much higher highlights for me...
Steve Wilson : The Raven that Refused to Sing -- I had been turned off of wilson's solo projects largely for the same reason i never got into grunge. Too much reality is just depressing to me. Wilson gets pretty dark. The raven track is so sad...it was moving. I did enjoy it. I bought the album despite my personal bias and did enjoy it but found the other tracks werent really doing anything new for me. Strangely i was reminded of Rush by both DT and SW offerings this year.
Queensryche: Queensryche -- ok..i kind of enjoyed it...but the two tracks that i found myself listening to the most were the remakes of the older material....which kind of lead me (again) back to older ryche tracks and an appreciation for just how great these guys used to be in the 80s. Thanks for the album guys...also i am not anti tate ... i am just turned off of all of them for continuing this charade for so long.
