;D Kickass, Mike!! Are you also seeing them next month at Beacon Theater?
Well, I finally gave the new DT a spin in its entirety tonight. Very, very pleasantly surprised!! They do sound very tight. James vox are phenomenal, Petrucci's sound is amazing and Mangini really fits well into this record's scope of new material. There are already 3 songs at first listen that have stuck immediately.
A few days ago Wiche shared me the link for "Breaking All Illusions" which had those long-awaited lyrics from Myung. It was pretty sweet yet I only listened half-assed to be honest! But tonight was different. As I listened to the opening of song I was totally getting in the groove while driving around in my car for work. After I turned one corner I saw in my rear view mirror a most beautiful sun just over western horizon.. only a few seconds later LaBrie sings:
With the sun in place There's a test of faith...
It reminded me of my 1st listen to BLOOD by OSI just 2.5 years ago. I was driving west into the sun on a street named Western Rd. and Kevin started to sing, "I was heading West 30 days faster"..lol i kid you not! Anyway.. bravo DT and have fun Friday, Mike, on upcoming full band signing session. Tell them to get Arch / Matheos to open for them on 2nd leg!

I think this album has a little bit of everything. It's technical, but not overly technical. It has a balance of heavy and soft. The vocal melodies are strong and catchy. The lyrics are really good! I'm pleased.
Not sure if some of you saw this, but MP had a comment about the song structures being too similar to I&W songs and he called it a "desperate attempt" to relive the past. To me, it's a case of the band realizing they lost their way in recent albunms and returning to their roots.
"Bridges in the Sky" is the boooomb!

Listened to it a few times now.
I think it's a return to form in terms of their attitude to the songwriting. This is the first album where Jordan Rudess plays more than pads, really fast solos and very occasional riffs, which has been my main problem with the last few DT albums. The interplay between guitar and keyboard which made "classic DT" so great is back, and the keys are probably more prominent than even I&W.
I'm also glad to see the band starting to reach out beyond their normal sound palette. The vocal sample at the start and end of Bridges in the Sky, plus the choir. I also thought the electronic drums on Build Me Up, Break Me Down were particularly tasteful (and something they would never have done with MP). The lyrics overall are better - cheesy in parts, yes, but I really couldn't stand those fantasy lyrics on Systematic Chaos.
As for the actual songwriting, I'm not so sure. There are definitely some really strong parts, but this isn't a return to the standard of I&W through to 6DOIT. Bridges in the Sky is the highlight, but most of the ballads, and This is the Life, feel quite forced. The drums could probably have been a bit bolder, but unlike MP, Mangini didn't use the same couple of drum fills over and over.
Overall, better than the last few albums, but not quite at the gold standards of the past.

I think its more of a desperate attempt at reviving DT. He probably confuses 'sounds like I&W' for 'sounds like DT' ...yea how dare they!! wheres the metalica part?? wheres the U2 part??? EDIT: man i Bridges in the Sky just doesnt do anything for me...i keep listening to it...lol...the Outcry track really gets my juices going tho...eh...its funny... on the whole im absolutely pleased with the album. It exceeds my expectations and i think its style is really great.

That was a good mini review, una!
And viv, I can't believe you don't like Bridges! I didn't think it was possible to not like that song. When I first heard it, I listened to it for 20 times straight. I was addicted like it was a drug.
And the band posted a video for "On Th BAcks of Angels" today!

A pathetic attempt to re-do DT's past... It's a shame they don't have the magic that the recipe needs to be great: Kevin Moore.
ADTOE is just a good album, just an average DT album. Things to rescue: Myung's lyrics (But the music in that song just doesn't do them justice) and that's it. Now, let's move on and wait for OSI 4, an album that will really bring something new to our lifes...

i kind of think its the best thing theyv done since Awake. I really think Myung, John and James came through on this with that classic majesty spirit. For once theres a new DT album that gives me something to listen to and enjoy...obviously the lyrics would have been much better with kevin and well who knows what might have been but they dont have him anymore ...im really glad they made this.

i think the new album is fair at best. Lost Not Forgotten and Bridges in the Sky are my favorites. There are some great moments throughout, but overall its missing that "something"
I think Black Clouds was their best album since Six Degrees, and this new one doesn't compare. I'm not sure if its Portnoy or not, but this one just isn't doing it for me.

Just got back from the full-band meet and greet on NYC. I'll have some pics tomorrow, since my friend took them and he needs to email them to me. Below is a pic of the signed poster that I took with my cell phone. My reaction is: holy shit! It's incredibly overwhelming to walk into the room and see all five band members sitting there looking back at you. I must say I prefer going to an event with just a single band member. With all five there, my mind was racing. I wasn't sure where to look first, whether i should be taking pics or whether i should be talking to the guys, and i'm trying to make sure they sign my poster, and i need to keep moving down the table. and it's all over in less than two minutes. It was at Guitar Center in NYC. We all lined up outside and they took us inside 5-10 at a time to a back room where the band was seated at a table. They gave us little posters to have signed. Myung was first. I shook his hand and he signed the poster. I asked him if I could take a pic with him. He hesitated and then mumbled OK in expected myung fashion, lol. Unfortunately, by the time I got the attention of my friend with the camera I got pushed down the line and I was too far away for a pic. The workers wouldnt let you go behind the table. The band members leaned across the table for pics. So once I was too far away, that was it. Next was Petrucci, who i have a pic with from last year. Then LaBrie. I took a pic with LaBrie. I told him he sounded incredible on the new album. He said I looked familiar and he was certain he'd met me before. I said no this was the first time. But I said I met Jordan earlier this year at his Japan benefit. Jordan was next and he overheard me say that and he remembered me and thanked me for going to his benefit. i asked him what we could expect on tour and if there would be interesting scenery or stage props, and he wouldnt say. He just said they are eager to get out there. Last was Mangini. I was so excited to see him. When I entered the room a few minutes earlier, he made eye contact with me and I yelled out: "MIKE MAN-GI-NI!!!" He smiled and gave me a thumbs up. I said "Great work on the album, Mike!" He mouthed thank you. He also posed for a pic with me when I reached him at the table. I'll upload them tomorrow. My overall reaction is that I need to prepare questions next time, lol. It happens too fast and the nerves take over so you can't think clearly. And it was multipled by five because the entire band was there. Really wild. Here's the poster: Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Yeah, amazing to meet the ENTIRE band in one sitting! Like I mentioned to ya the other nite, Mike, I used to do that quite a lot growing up. Whenever it was the full group at the signing it was definitely a different atmosphere. The security does make you move down the line much quicker too. It does depend on the fan turnout also but what that guitar store did was nice for all of you. Grouping just a small number of fans together at a time makes sense. Uber cool that Jordan remembered you! Funny that LaBrie did but couldn't quite recall where your face was from..lol It had to be that Japan benefit, yeah. That sucks you were "pushed ahead" when your friend was moments away from snapping you and John Myung. *sigh* Oh well, next time! PS: Anxiously await viewing the other pics!

ADTOE is just a good album, just an average DT album. . THIS! The album is just OK, IMO. It's like everything else gets better but it still lacks the sense of melody in the keys that they had with KM and even Sherinian. I do like the shift back to the Yes and Kansas influences.
