I've had my first listen through the album, and I must say I already love it!!! It's DT back to the days I loved them so much. I didn't like the 3 or 4 last albums they released, but this tickles me where I itch And the chorus in "Bridges in the Sky" is just so powerful and beautiful... Absolutly amazing...

I agree, morten! Bridges instantly grabbed me when I first heard it and I've been in love with that song ever since. It's one of my favorite DT songs of all-time. I can't wait to see them play some of the new material live next month!

Man, thats awesome mebert! cool pics, and I know that feel, too - anyone thats met their idols and felt like a wordless tard afterwords, ugh. But hey, they must get that all the time.
I like that you got the mighty Myung to speak! Thats a major feat itself!
As for the new DT, ugh... I still need time with it, but I've had an issue with DT for the last few albums, and this one is more of the same, so far... some amazing spots, but a lot of meh... but yeah, I need time with it. Who knows, it could grow on me. I am WAY more excited for OSI4.
Glaring difference in the mix on the new DT, though, no more lead drums lol. And gotta love the backing vocals, as much as I love MP, I always cringed at his vox.

I'm curious. Based on the above DT t-shirt, what would Kevin's superhero character have been back in the day?

I just got back from a whirlwind two days where I saw DT in NJ and then NY. I met a bunch of forum members from the DT forums and got recognized by a few people from my avatar pic, lol. I gotta say, Mangini is incredible. He plays with a huge smile and his drum solo blew everyone away. I got there early today and chilled outside the band entrance. I saw Jordan, Myung and Mangini and got pics with Myung and Mangini. I'll post them tomorrow. Too tired now. But in closing I'll say this: Mangini -- Half man, Half genie, all awesome!

Me and the silent man: John Myung! He actually spoke to me too. He said "Yeah" when I asked him if I could take a photo with him. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

That's just awesome! Maybe the more DT sees those FW shirts, the more they're inclined to be open on the possibility of having a long overdue double bill with them next year. Anything's possible I suppose! Your patience for meeting DT yet again is to be commended, Mike. PS: Myung, a true gentleman. He didn't even ask you to carry his bass for him!

Call me crazy, but my friend Chris is going to the Albany show today and he asked me to tag along. I said OK. It's a Saturday night, so why not. It's a three-hour drive. The deciding factor was that I was able to score a second row ticket on Ticketmaster somehow yesterday. Right in front of Petrucci! I've never sat that close.

sick man! I was lucky enough(or brutish enough) to push my way to the front rail at a House of Blues show back in the Sherinian days(the tour that MP brought a little kit out front and let peeps jam on his toms) and I was right in front of Petrucci - mind blowing.
DId you get any pics from your seat?

This is the worst dt record even worse than systematic choas and octivarium. Its a real shame because black clouds and silver linings was rock solid.Dts best material is images and words, awake, the song a change of seasons and both disks of 6doit.Most overated is metro part 2 and octivarium. Most underated is dream and day unite and bcasl. The only good songs on adtoe are beneath the surface and breaking all illusions.Rest in peace relevent dt 1985-2009.

interesting. I agree on much of what you said, I&W and Awake are by far my favorites along with the Majesty era stuff. I detest octivarium and agree that SFAM2 is over rated. However i hated BCASL and Systematic and quite enjoy DTOE. ...oh well...

Well to each his/her own.Its nice that there are at least 2 people who understand that metro part 2 isnt the greatest prog album ever.It isnt even a top 5 dt album! And octivarium is one of those albums that looks cool sounds cool but isnt.Did the title track really need to last 24 minutes?

exactly . Yea i never could understand all the hoopla about SFAM. People always say it was their most creative ...to me its like...ok they did an ENTIRE ALBUM based on the theme of one song...they play that original song backwards...they reference it all over the place. I just dont find it that impressive. Sure it has its moments but...meh Octovarium...i remember when i bought it , i was kinda broke so i had been holding out then one night i decided shit i just need some new music!! i didnt have itunes or anything , and i knew the album had just come out so...i ended up walking for like 30 minutes in SUPER COLD -30 montreal febuary to buy the album. I wanted to like it so much...but i just couldnt get into any of the tracks...not one did it for me. Big disappointment.

I love SFAM because I'm partial to rock operas i guess. It had a newish direction that I actually liked. With 6doit, they started another direction and I haven't been a fan since.

Funny you should say that about the title track being overly-long. I think I read an interview with John Petrucci where he says that they sat down and said "right, let's write an epic". That strikes me as the wrong attitude to take - to say "this song needs to be at least 20 minutes, no matter what". I think there are some good moments in that track, but it really is quite overblown. I'm sure I've said this all before, but ToT through BC&SL represents the low point in DT's creativity to me. There is no real progression in the sound. A Rite of Passage could have just as easily been on ToT. As I Am could have sat happily on SC. Wither could have fitted on Octavarium etc. With ADTOE we're starting to see some changes - more keyboards, more electronics, generally speaking a slightly more adventurous album than the past few. I very much get the feeling that the band wanted to push the boat out further and explore even more new ground, but felt they had to prove to their fanbase that without Portnoy they were still DT.
