Hey I know this thread is a little old but I wanted to chime in on my two cents.
We all know DT was at their best when they had Kevin and I belive he was the soul of Dream Theater. I personaly belive the heart of the band was Mike Portnoy.
I know Portnoy is annoying and with his leaving the band then suddenly wanting back in because he was jealous of Mangini he lost credibility, but there is no denying his talents as drummer and also as a producer.
Since Kevin left DT has lost alot of its personality and became bland with the exeption of Portnoy. The rest of the guys seem so laid back and thats why without Portnoy this album was so boring.
I love John Myung but he is seriously underutilized in DT. Mangini is a great drummer but is more like a hired gun, being the new guy he wont get to write lyrics or make any kind of decisions on what the band does from a creative standpoint. LeBrie is the vocalist and doesnt write music.
So the band is now being run by Petrucci and Rudess who write 10 minute souless wankfests that are all about showing off their skills instead of real songs.
In the WD&DU-Awake era Kevin kept Petrucci in line to an extend and of course Jordan wasnt in the band at that point, that was a key reason why DT actually lived up to their massive potential in the Moore era.
And also do you think Kevin or Portnoy for that matter would have stood for Petrucci carbon copying songs from I&W for this record? On the back of angels has the exact same song structure as pull me under. This is the life has the same one from another day.
As bad as the lyrics were, BC&SL was way more of a return to form that this. I dont have any high expectations for their next record and its a shame. Petrucci should fire Rudess and beg Moore or even Sherinian to come back and give them 100% creative control of the band.
By the way I am not trying to start a war here or anything just voicing my opinions, being honest. I think alot of the people who praise ADTOE are the same people who praise Scenes from a memory and ignore the awsomeness of the early DT and epic songs like A Vision.
Just my two cents(sorry if anyone finds that phrase cheesier that the music video for another day).
